Hampden 1983 by Kill Devil is a 35-year-old Jamaican single cask from Hunter Laing, bottled in 2019 at 58.1% volume. Distilled to the HGML marque and limited to 198 bottles, it is a rare old Hampden with real collector focus. MATURATION: long continental ageing in oak has polished the sharper edges while leaving the marque's force intact. The cask has added structure rather than sweetness, so the rum stays direct, concentrated and clearly shaped by Hampden's high-ester distillate. SERVING: serve neat at room temperature in a Glencairn or small tulip glass; add water only drop by drop. Pair with dark chocolate, aged coffee or a blue cheese. For cigars, choose My Father Le Bijou 1922 Grand Robusto: cocoa, cream, toast and wood have the weight for this style.
Tasting notes
Deep copper gold.
Ripe mango, guava and overripe pineapple; tanned leather, liquorice, light tobacco; allspice, lime peel and a faint glue note.
Thick oily mouthfeel; meaty fruit, guava and grilled pineapple; black pepper, oak spice, star anise; persistent cement-glue note.
Long, dry; grilled pineapple, black pepper, allspice and lime zest linger over a mineral cask echo.
Founded in 1753 in Trelawny, north-western Jamaica, Hampden is the benchmark for heavy pot-still Jamaican character. Long wild fermentation, dunder pits and copper pot distillation create the estate's unmistakable ester-driven profile, from tropical fruit and spice to the famous solvent edge. Its marque system records style and ester intensity, giving collectors a rare map of how each release is built before ageing adds its own shape.
