This is the 2024 release of Bowmore 40 Years Old, a limited-edition Islay single malt bottled at 45.1% volume. MATURATION: The whisky matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. SUGGESTIONS: Serve neat in a tulip glass at room temperature; add still water only a drop at a time, if at all. Aged Comté makes a good savoury match, and a mild to medium-bodied Dominican corona suits it after the meal.
Tasting notes
Deep mahogany.
Juicy papaya and passion fruit, rich cocoa and butterscotch.
Smooth and aromatic: tobacco leaf, walnut cake, butterscotch and a hint of peat smoke.
Long, fresh and intense; tobacco, fruit, spice and smoke.
The Bowmore name was first committed to record in 1779, making it the oldest distillery on Islay; local archivists suggest distilling in the town began almost a decade earlier. The distillery still runs its own malt barn, where barley is turned by hand every four hours, day and night, then dried over peat smoke in a two-furnace kiln. Its No.1 Vault stands on the shore of Loch Indaal.
