Family Casks 2001 (Summer 2021 release) is the sister vintage to the May 2020 release — same 2001 distillation, but drawn from sherry butt #3932 rather than cask #3384, and aged a year longer. The contrast is the point: one cask, one vintage, two different stages of cellar evolution. Cask strength of 58.8% volume, 569 bottles. THE CASK: a more active sherry butt than the 2020-release sister — the depth and the dried-fruit weight read clearly against the lighter 4th-fill profile of #3384. Twenty years in this cask brings the classic Glenfarclas Family Cask sherry signature: dried fruit, cocoa, walnut, polished leather, integrated oak. The Grants' two-decade rest in a more generous cask versus a worn one is the comparison. SERVING: a Glencairn at room temperature, neat. Three to five drops of cool water lift the dried fruit out of the wood. At the table the bottle pairs with bittersweet dark chocolate, fig and walnut bread, aged Stilton, or a long-aged Dominican corojo cigar where the spice and the sherry depth find common ground.
Tasting notes
Warm mahogany, copper highlights.
Intense sherry — dried fruit, fig, dark chocolate; layered with leather, walnut, candied orange peel.
Full, deep palate — concentrated dried fruit, cocoa, walnut, oak spice, polished leather.
Long, warming — sherry-soaked oak, dark chocolate, lingering dried fruit.
At the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside — and one of a handful of Scottish distilleries still in continuous family ownership: the Grants have run Glenfarclas since John Grant bought it in 1865 for £511.19, and the sixth generation is now at the helm. The house style is shaped by two choices that most modern Speysides have moved away from: direct-fired stills (gas flame under the pot, rather than internal steam coils — preserving a heavier, fattier, more textured spirit), and a near-total commitment to Spanish sherry casks for maturation. The Family Casks programme is the deepest expression of the cellar — single-cask vintage releases drawn from the Grant family's private reserves, no two bottlings alike.
