The first release of the oldest whisky to join Ardbeg's core range. This supreme expression proves that age cannot tame Ardbeg’s smoky power. Instead, it can yield some of the most complex and sumptuous flavours from the Distillery. Bottled in 2020 from rare casks filled during some of the Distillery’s darkest days, this is Ardbeg at its most complex and balanced. Non-chill-filtered with a strength of 46%. Lot#L2429340
Tasting notes
Bright Amber
A pungent burst of smoked cream, peppermint and toffee, with Ardbeg’s classic fennel and pine resin. Earthy bonfire mixed with herbal and tropical fruit notes, along with fragrant candle wax.
An extremely vibrant, hot peppery mouthfeel leads into a burst of sherbet lemon sweetness, candied apples, pears and orange. Hints of carbolic soap and tar, more creamy toffee, aniseed and chilli pepper.
A long, mellow, lingering aftertaste, with loads of cream, fudge and delicate antiseptic notes with the elegant, soothing style of Ardbeg.
Founded by John Macdougall in 1815 and operated as a Private Ltd. Co. until January 1977, when it was taken over by a new owner who demolished the best of the maturing warehouses. In 1981 the distillery was mothballed, but it slowly recovered again. But it wasn't until 1996 that the distillery purchased by Glenmorangie broke its silence. By this time, Ardbeg had built its reputation as one of the cult single malts. Glenmorangie's goal to fulfil expectations drove them to recreate the brand.Today the distillery is owned by Moet Hennessy. Compared to other Islay malts, Ardbeg focuses on the aromas, spiciness and maltiness of the heavily peated whiskies instead of the sea and salt flavours.
