Founded in 1815 by the brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the southern coast of Islay, Laphroaig is one of the island's great emblematic distilleries. Its Gaelic name — 'the beautiful hollow of the broad bay' — describes its seaside setting beneath the peaty cliffs from which it draws both water and local peat. Laphroaig is unmistakable in profile: medicinal, heavily phenolic (around 40 ppm), iodine, sea spray, tar and creamy smoke. The distillery is also one of the few still to maintain partial floor malting, and its bond with the British crown is legendary — Prince Charles (now King Charles III) granted it his Royal Warrant in 1994. Samaroli's independent bottlings of Laphroaig are particularly sought by collectors, the Italian house having built a decades-long reputation on its Islay selections.
