A fine old rum from the West Indies, that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Caroni distillery. This release contains rum aged for 18 years in Trinidad, bottled in 2018 at 90º imperial proof, just like the original version from the 1940s, exported to the UK during the by Tate & Lyle. The special bottling had been created by La Maison & Velier and it is presented in a traditional Caroni bottle with the historic bottle labelling from the 1940's version.
Tasting notes
Amber
Pure, typical notes from Caroni with strong oily aromas that soften after a couple of minutes. Intense ripe banana notes, next to a lively balsamic stretch of eucalyptus, liquorice and cedarwood. With water, more or less unchanged, except for the addition of aniseed and emphasis on the overall balsamic trait.
At first, notes of tar, sweet liquorice, camphor and bonfire smoke welcome the palate. Citrus fruits in a fair measure are harmoniously blended with spicy wood and a discreet note of black pepper. A few drops of water brings the sweet balsamic notes, while the notes of tar and smoke start to fade.
Very long, mainly dominated by liquorice, but also by the intense smoke trait and cinnamon hints.
The Caroni Distillery was founded in 1923 on the site of an old sugarcane plantation, in 2002 it closed its doors and it no longer exists. Today it is a lost distillery known for their heavy, full-flavoured rums.
