Midleton Very Rare 2022 is the first vintage composed by Kevin O'Gorman, appointed Master Distiller at Midleton in 2020 and the heir to a lineage of blenders who have made this annual release one of Irish whiskey's most anticipated. 40% volume.

THE BLEND: single pot still and single grain whiskeys aged between 12 and 33 years, married in ex-bourbon casks selected by the master distiller for character and consistency rather than the youngest commercially viable age. The pot-still spices and the grain-whiskey sweetness sit together at a finished-blend density that no individual cask achieves alone — the architecture is the work.

SERVING: pour neat at room temperature in a tulip glass — the long finish is the point and ice will close it. A single drop of cool water can lift the citrus dimension. At the table it pairs with a slow-cooked beef cheek, an aged Coolea or Cashel Blue, dark chocolate with sea salt, or a Honduran maduro cigar where the pot-still spice and the wrapper's earth find common ground. Equally a Manhattan with La Quintinye Vermouth Royal Rouge — the Irish weight needs the richer vermouth.

L'Eau de Vodka by LDV pours at 40% volume in a minimalist, crystal-trimmed flask. The brand draws on water from deep in the Alpine massif and a measured bouquet of Swiss-grown botanicals — built equally for a slow neat pour and as a serious cocktail base.

SERVING: serve straight from the freezer in a small chilled glass, or stirred over a single large ice cube to let the alpine notes come forward. Ideal in a Martini — 6 cl LDV, 1 cl La Quintinye Vermouth Royal Dry, stirred over ice, strained into a chilled coupe with a lemon twist.

Barrel Proof B522 is the second batch of 2022 in Heaven Hill's flagship cask-strength programme, a 12-year-old Kentucky Straight bottled uncut and unfiltered at 60.5% volume (121 proof).

MATURATION: a small batch of barrels hand-selected by Master Distiller Conor O'Driscoll from Heaven Hill's deep reserves, vatted but otherwise untouched, no chill-filtration, no caramel colouring, no proofing-down with water. The Barrel Proof series releases three batches per year (A, B, C); B522 is the spring 2022 batch.

SERVING: at cask strength, neat is the start; a small splash of cool water brings it under control without flattening the whiskey. The high proof rewards an Old Fashioned built strong (a single sugar cube, two dashes Angostura, an orange peel, no muddling), and a bold Manhattan with La Quintinye Vermouth Royal Rouge. Pairs with smoked brisket, peanut brittle, an aged cheddar, or a Nicaraguan habano-seed cigar where weight meets weight.

Extra-dry is barrel aged to create the dryness and contains 27 botanicals and Pineau des Charentes Blanc which creates a delicate floral bouquet including citrus and spice aromas for a complex long lasting yet extra dry profile. Elegant and delicately luscious, the Vermouth expresses fresh citrus aromas, yellow fruit flavours and a background of wooded spice. Ideal for aperitifs, spritzers and exclusive cocktails. The whole range is 100% natural, non-filterd, no colouring nor flavours are added.

What makes Michlers Orange Gin different from standard citrus gins? It is built around approximately 15 botanicals — juniper, coriander, cardamom, angelica, orange peel, Silesian wormwood and a mountain berry with blackcurrant character — macerated by hand before a seven-times distillation that concentrates orange and mandarin at the front of the aromatic profile, with the wormwood adding a subtle herbal-bitter dimension behind. Small batch, handcrafted at 44% volume.

PRODUCTION: Small batch,. Approximately 15 botanicals including Silesian wormwood (floral-bitter), mountain berry (blackcurrant), orange peel and mandarin. Hand maceration before distillation. Seven-times distilled. No artificial colouring. 44% volume | 70 cl.

COCKTAIL SUGGESTION: The orange-forward profile and the wormwood bitterness make Michlers Orange an ideal Negroni gin — substitute it for London Dry and the classic bitter-floral balance shifts towards citrus without losing its structure. It also works cleanly in a Martinez (Michlers Orange | La Quintinye Vermouth Royal Rouge | maraschino | Angostura | orange bitters), where the orange peel echo between gin and garnish creates a tight loop. For a simple G&T, use a Mediterranean-style tonic and a large strip of orange peel.
